Oil Pipelines in Virginia

  • Virginia has three major pipelines for petroleum products, two traversing north-south and one traversing east-west.
  • The Colonial Pipeline connects refineries to end users throughout the southern and eastern United States through a pipeline system that spans more than 5,500 miles. It is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day and transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the east coast. The pipeline delivers refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, home heating oil, as well as fuel for the U.S. Military.
  • Through Virginia, the Colonial Pipeline, runs north-south and goes east of the Blue Ridge. The pipeline has numerous above ground valves, pumps, and storage tanks facilities across its Virginia footprint. It carries refined petroleum products from the North Carolina border through Lynchburg and continues northeast through Northern Virginia. The Colonial Pipeline terminates in a Linden, New Jersey terminal, where it supplies the New York City area. Stub lines to Roanoke and Chesapeake were constructed to serve population centers that were not located on the mainline route.
  • The Products (SE) Pipeline (formerly named the Plantation Pipeline) is one of the largest refined petroleum products pipelines in the United States. It can deliver approximately 720,000 barrels per day of gasoline, jet fuel, diesel and biodiesel through its approximately 3,180-mile pipeline network, which originates in Louisiana and ends in the Washington, D.C. area. Products come into the pipeline from refineries, other products pipeline systems, and via marine facilities on the Mississippi River. The pipeline delivers motor gasoline, diesel (including biodiesel), kerosene, and commercial and military jet fuels.
  • The Products (SE) Pipeline crosses the Virginia-North Carolina border at a point further east of the Colonial Pipeline and carries petroleum products directly to Richmond. It continues north, parallel to the I-95 corridor, and terminates in Northern Virginia at Newington. This pipeline has numerous above ground valves, pumps, and storage tanks facilities across its Virginia footprint.
  • Sunoco LP (formerly operated by NuStar) operates approximately 11-miles of refined petroleum product pipeline from the North Landing area of Virginia Beach to Naval Air Station Oceana. Sunoco receives jet fuel via barge shipment off of the North Landing River to on site storage that is then transported via pipeline to NAS Oceana’s storage facility.

Virginia Pipeline Infrastructure

  • Virginia has 3,000 miles of high-pressure natural gas "trunk" pipelines with an additional 20,000 miles of lower-pressure, smaller-diameter distribution pipes connecting to 1.2 million customers. There are also approximately 10 miles of regulated "gathering lines" that connect gas-production wells to the pipeline network..

Additional Details

  • Virginia has 10 local natural gas distribution pipeline operators, who operate natural gas pipelines within certificated territories as depicted. An additional approximate 60 smaller propane and natural gas operators exist throughout the Commonwealth. Many utilizes various above ground pressure control and valve stations. Some secured with fencing, other with locked valves. Additionally, three pipeline operators in Springfield, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth operate large propane-air-natural gas mixing and injection facilities with extremely large quantities of stored propane. Many other smaller and non-regulated pipeline facilities such as propane storage facilities exist throughout the state.

Complex Operating Environment: Oil and Gas Pipelines
VILT courses provide basic bombing prevention information ranging from IED construction and classification to the terrorist attack cycle. All online virtual training courses are conducted with a live instructor, using an online learning platform. Participants can connect to the learning platform via most devices that can access the internet. VILTs are great for participants with time constraints as most classes are approximately one-hour in length and can be taken independently.  Click the blue box below for more information.
