Active Shooter Incidents In The United States 2023
In 2023, the FBI designated 48 shootings as active shooter incidents. Although incidents decreased by 4% from 2022 (50 incidents) to 2023, the total number of active shooter incidents increased by 60% from 2019 (30 incidents) to 2023.
The 48 active shooter incidents in 2023 occurred in 26 states and represent five location categories: open space, commerce, education, healthcare, and residence.
Central to any terrorist organization’s capacity for operationalization is its ability to draw recruits and public support.
