This paper highlights the importance of post-event Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) for athletic trainers who may experience mental stress as a result of dealing with critical incidents. CISM is a process that consists of two different approaches, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) and critical incident defusing.

CISD is held within 24 to 72 hours of a critical incident and is led by a team of peer counselors and mental health professionals. This process goes through seven phases, including:

• reviewing the facts of the event
• sharing feelings
• identifying signs and symptoms
• sorting through feelings with assistance
• receiving suggestions for overcoming stress
• developing a plan of action for return to work
• obtaining follow-up assistance if necessary.
