The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), in partnership with the Virginia State Police, is pleased to announce Domestic Extremism and Violent Extremism Awareness training. Funding for this training is provided through the Department of Homeland Security’s Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Grant.
Day 1 (Half Day ~ 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm)
Department of Homeland Security’s Community Awareness Briefing (CAB)
This presentation is designed to help participants develop an understanding of violent extremist recruitment tactics and explore ways to prevent such threats at the local level. This is a case studies-based presentation that empowers individuals to intervene.
Virginia Fusion Center’s (VFC) Shield Program
The VFC Shield was established to increase community awareness of criminal and terrorism trends and incidents within the Commonwealth, United States and across the world. The VFC Shield motto is “awareness through information sharing”. Information sharing increases preparedness, mitigation and prevention efforts which makes our communities safer. In addition, VFC Shield connects members with available resources and sector specific content.
Day 2 (Full Day ~ 8:00 am to 5:00 pm)
The presenter will provide attendees with an introductory overview of numerous domestic terror groups and criminally subversive subcultures present in communities throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States. The training will provide a definition of violent extremism and focus on awareness of individuals and groups that attempt to advance social, political or religious beliefs through force or violence.
At the conclusion of the training, attendees will be better positioned to identify racially and ideologically motivated violent behavior and discern between criminal activity and First Amendment protected speech and actions.
Who Should Attend?
This training is open to sworn law enforcement officers, school and campus security officers, school and campus administration and staff, mental health professionals, faith-based community members, and community members with a desire to learn more about this important topic.
