VFC Shield Members,

The trend, dubbed the "AI Homeless Man Prank," involves individuals using AI image generators to create hyper-realistic photos of a disheveled man appearing inside someone's home—on a couch, in a hallway, or at the front door. These images are then sent to family or friends with alarming messages like "There's a man in the house," prompting panic and often emergency calls.

These hoaxes have triggered emergency responses, wasted law enforcement resources, and caused emotional distress. Law enforcement agencies across the Commonwealth are monitoring the trend.

With the increasing use of AI-generated photos and videos, law enforcement is witnessing a surge in AI related pranks. In these pranks, individuals use AI image generators to create realistic images, which they then place within images of the prank recipient's home. The goal is to trick homeowners or residents into believing that a stranger is currently in their home prompting a reaction.

These pranks, similar to "swatting" calls, pose a risk to the occupants of the residence. When officers arrive at the scene, believing someone is intruding and potentially posing a threat, it creates confusion and chaos on the scene.

To Mitigate Risk:
• Verify before reacting: Always take threats seriously, but if you receive alarming images, try to confirm their authenticity before calling emergency services.
• Educate family members: Parents and educators should discuss the ethical and legal implications of digital pranks.
• Report incidents: Contact local police if you suspect a prank or receive suspicious content.
• Digital literacy resources: Organizations like Common Sense Media and Cyberbullying Research Center offer tools to understand and counter online pranks.

The misuse of generative AI for pranks and hoaxes is expected to grow as tools become more accessible. Public awareness and digital literacy are critical to minimizing harm.
