The U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) will release Preventing Targeted Workplace Violence: A U.S. Secret Service Guide to Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management on October 21, 2026. This new publication provides a scalable framework to help organizations identify and address individuals or situations of concern before violence occurs. Its release comes amid rising workplace violence nationally. Federal data also documented 470 workplace homicides in 2024, underscoring the severity of this issue.
In Virginia, new requirements further illustrate growing concerns. As of July 1, 2026, hospitals with emergency departments must collect detailed workplace violence incident data and report it quarterly to leadership and annually to the Virginia Department of Health, with confidentiality protections built in. Additionally, House Bill 944 requires Virginia employers with 100 or more employees to adopt workplace violence policies by January 1, 2027, including clear reporting and investigation procedures and anti-retaliation provisions.
These developments underscore the urgent need for strong behavioral threat assessment and management programs. -VFC Shield
