The HIPAA Journal has compiled healthcare data breach statistics from October 2009, when the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) started publishing summaries of healthcare data breaches on its website. The data clearly shows an upward trend in data breaches since 2009, peaking with 772 so far in 2026.

The U.S. is barreling toward a deficit of roughly 187,000 physicians over the next decade. Nearly half of that gaping hole exists in primary care, the basic, front-line medicine that keeps people out of emergency rooms.

The Healthcare and Public Health sector will always be a target of cyber criminals. Therefore, it is crucial that organizations leverage cybersecurity best practices not just as preventative tools, but also as tools to improve our ability to respond.
